The Opportunity Card simplifies the process for candidates seeking employment in Germany. It allows applicants to work without undergoing a lengthy recognition procedure. Eligibility requires at least two years of vocational training or a university degree, along with sufficient proficiency in German (A1) or English (B2).
Holders of the Opportunity Card can take a two-week trial job or work part-time (up to 20 hours per week). The card permits candidates to stay in Germany for one year, primarily to find a job. This stay can be extended by up to two additional years upon application at the local Foreigners’ Registration Office.

Basic Requirements
- Language Skills: Proficiency in German (A1 level) or English (B2 level).
- Vocational Training: At least two years of vocational training as per the rules of the country of origin.
- Financial Means: Proof of sufficient financial resources, such as an employment contract for a part-time job (up to 20 hours per week).
Points Allocation
- Four Points: Awarded for partial recognition of a foreign professional qualification or permission to practice a regulated profession (e.g., teacher, nurse, engineer). Very few applicants meet these criteria.
- Three Points: Granted for five years of professional experience (within the last seven years) in the learned profession plus two years of prior professional training according to the country of origin’s rules. Alternatively, three points are awarded for good German language skills (B2 level).
- Two Points: Given for two years of professional experience preceded by vocational training (within the last five years). Additionally, applicants under 35 years old receive two points. German language skills at the B1 level also earn two points.
- One Point: Awarded to applicants under 40 years old or those with a previous stay in Germany (at least six months, excluding tourist visits). Documented proof is required.
- One Point: Also awarded for very good English proficiency (C1 level), reasonable German knowledge (A2 level), vocational training/university degree in an area of official labor shortage in Germany, or applying for the Opportunity Card with a spouse.
