Checked: October 2026 · We re-check this page every January.
You can apply for Germany’s Opportunity Card from Ghana, fully online, with one appointment in Accra. What slows people down is not the form. It is missing school certificates, language proof and the funds. All three are things you can prepare early. This page explains each step with official sources.

Can you apply for the Opportunity Card from Ghana?
Short answer: Yes. Ghanaians living in Ghana apply through the German Embassy in Accra. You need a degree or a vocational qualification of at least two years, state-recognised in Ghana; German A1 or English B2; and proof of €1,091 a month in funds. Unless your qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you also need 6 points. The German mission decides every case.
The Opportunity Card (in German: Chancenkarte) is a residence permit under § 20a of the German Residence Act. It lets you live in Germany for up to 12 months while you look for a qualified job. You may work up to 20 hours a week and do trial jobs of up to two weeks per employer.
With a fully recognised qualification you need no points; otherwise you take the points route. The Accra embassy points to anabin and the ZAB for recognition (anabin H+ guide).
The points (6 needed)
- Partial recognition of your qualification: 4
- Shortage occupation: 1
- Experience after your qualification: 5 of the last 7 years = 3, or 2 of the last 5 years = 2
- German A2 = 1, B1 = 2, B2 or higher = 3
- English C1 = 1
- Age under 35 = 2, age 35–39 = 1
- 6+ months of legal stay in Germany in the last 5 years (not as a tourist) = 1
- Partner who also meets the requirements and applies with you = 1
A self-assessment against the official criteria, not a decision.
Which German mission handles the Opportunity Card in Ghana?
Short answer: The German Embassy in Accra. You apply online through the Consular Services Portal, choosing Ghana as your place of residence. Applicants from Sierra Leone and Liberia also choose Ghana. After the embassy checks your upload, you book one appointment at the visa section in Accra, where your identity, documents and biometrics are checked.
Source: Accra, Opportunity Card information. In 2025, the Accra embassy issued about 2,698 national visas: 1,340 for study and 487 for work (Federal Foreign Office visa statistics 2025, approximate).
How do you apply and book the appointment?
Short answer: Apply on the Consular Services Portal. You fill in the form and upload your documents, and the embassy checks them for completeness. You then receive a link to book an appointment at the visa section in Accra. There, staff check your identity and original documents, hold a short interview, take fingerprints and a photo, and collect the fee.
- Create an account on the Consular Services Portal and choose Ghana.
- Upload clear scans of every document (checklist below).
- Answer any questions from the completeness check.
- Book with the link you receive.
- Bring your biometric passport, one photo (3.5 × 4.5 cm, white background, under 6 months old), the fee and all originals.
If a date is far away, keep checking: the embassy says new slots open regularly and cancellations appear. It does not give special appointments (Accra appointment FAQ). GOC does not book appointments or submit applications for anyone.
What waiting times does Accra publish?
Accra publishes no waiting or processing time for the Opportunity Card. Its information sheet says German authorities must be consulted and, depending on previous stays, the answer may take some time. Status questions are not answered in the first 4 weeks.
Do Ghanaian documents need legalisation?
Short answer: No, because legalisation is not available. The embassy says Ghanaian documents cannot be legalised for use in Germany, and has not done so since 2000. If a German authority doubts a document, it can ask the embassy to verify it. You cannot request this yourself, and it can take more than 10 months.
Verification is requested by German offices such as a registry office or foreigners’ authority (Accra verification FAQ). The Federal Foreign Office also lists Ghana among the countries where legalisation is suspended.
Two local details matter. The Opportunity Card sheet asks for a birth certificate based on first registration. And the embassy says there are no certified German–English translators in Ghana; most Ghanaian documents are in English, which the checklists accept (certification and translation).
Accra asks for these
- WAEC BECE and WASSCE certificates
- Birth certificate based on first registration
- Transcripts, degrees, employer statements, salary slips
- Passport valid for at least 6 more months, with 2 free pages
Where can you take the German or English test in Ghana?
Short answer: Goethe-Institut Ghana runs German exams from A1 to C2 in Accra and, with the Ghana Institute of Languages, in Kumasi. For English B2, the embassy asks for a certificate from a provider recognised by ALTE, or TOEFL. Either way, the certificate must not be older than one year when you apply.
German A1
Register within the published window. Registration closes automatically when places are full, and bookings cannot be changed. Bring your passport, or another accepted ID such as a Ghana Card; your name and date of birth go onto the certificate (Goethe-Institut Ghana).
English B2
An English-taught degree is not a certificate. The Nairobi embassy states that a certificate is required even if English is your native or study language, and Accra’s sheet asks for a certificate too. Confirm your test with the portal checklist before you book.
How do you pay the €75 visa fee in Ghana?
Short answer: You pay at your appointment in Accra. The fee is €75, payable in cash in Ghana cedis at the embassy’s current exchange rate, or by credit card. Check the rate shortly before your appointment. A new application after a refusal usually costs the fee again, so a complete first file pays off.
How do you prove funds from Ghana?
Short answer: Accra accepts one of three: a blocked account, a sponsor’s formal obligation letter, or a part-time job contract in Germany. For a blocked account, fund it by international transfer and upload the provider’s official confirmation. We found no official 2026 limit for sending cedis abroad for this purpose, so ask your bank which account, documents and channel it needs.
The amount is €1,091 a month. Ignore €1,027: that is the old 2024 figure some websites still show. Ask your provider which payment methods it accepts from Ghana, and leave time for the confirmation. See our proof of funds guide.
Accra accepts one of three
- Blocked account with at least €1,091 for each month
- Formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a person in Germany, under 6 months old on your entry date, new for each application
- Part-time job contract in Germany of up to 20 hours a week
What else goes in the file?
- CV; proof of job search, such as application emails or job offers
- Recognition proof (anabin or ZAB) and your language certificate
- Health insurance for your stay; travel insurance alone is not enough (insurance guide)
- Full list: document checklist
What mistakes do Ghanaian applicants make?
Short answer: The common ones are missing BECE or WASSCE certificates, a late-registered birth certificate, assuming an English-taught degree proves B2, an expired language certificate, a passport with less than 6 months left, and travel insurance instead of health cover. All of them can be fixed before you upload.
- Missing BECE or WASSCE certificates in the upload.
- A late-registered birth certificate when the sheet asks for first registration.
- Assuming an English-taught degree proves B2.
- A language certificate older than one year.
- A passport with less than 6 months left.
- Travel insurance instead of health insurance for the stay.
- An old obligation letter. It must be under 6 months old on entry.
- Planning with €1,027 a month. The figure is €1,091.
- Emailing for status in the first 4 weeks.
An illustrative timeline: 6 to 9 months from Accra
Short answer: This is an illustration only, not a forecast. Your timeline depends on appointment availability, your documents and the mission’s decision. Collect your school certificates and birth certificate first, because they often take the longest.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Months 1–2 | Self-check, anabin or ZAB; collect BECE, WASSCE and birth certificate; check names and dates |
| Months 2–3 | German A1 in Accra or Kumasi, or an English B2 test |
| Month 3 | Arrange funds and insurance |
| Months 3–4 | Submit on the portal; answer completeness questions |
| Months 4–6 | Appointment link and appointment in Accra; pay €75 |
| Months 6–9 | Decision (no official time); travel |
After you land: the honest part
Short answer: The Opportunity Card is a search permit, not a job. You may work up to 20 hours a week, and some holders spend months in side jobs outside their field. A qualified job is the goal: the EU Blue Card needs a salary of €50,700 in 2026, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and recent graduates.
If you find a qualified job that fits no other permit, a follow-up Opportunity Card can last up to 2 more years. Our Visa-to-Job track is coaching for this phase, not job placement.
Opportunity Card from Ghana: your questions
Where do Ghanaians apply for the Opportunity Card?
At the German Embassy in Accra, through the online Consular Services Portal. You upload your documents, the embassy checks them, and you receive a link to book an appointment in Accra. Applicants living in Sierra Leone or Liberia also apply through Accra and choose Ghana as their place of residence in the portal.
How long does the Opportunity Card take from Ghana?
Accra publishes no processing time for this visa. Its sheet says German authorities are consulted and, depending on previous stays, the answer may take some time. Status questions are not answered in the first 4 weeks. Keep your certificate, insurance and obligation letter dates in mind while you wait, and avoid fixed travel bookings.
Do I need to legalise my Ghanaian documents?
No. The embassy says Ghanaian documents cannot be legalised for use in Germany and have not been since 2000. If a German authority doubts a document, it can ask the embassy to verify it. You cannot start this yourself, and the embassy says verification can take more than 10 months.
Do I need an English test if I studied in English?
Plan for one. On the points route you need German A1 or English B2, and Accra asks for a certificate from a provider recognised by ALTE, or TOEFL, not older than one year. The Nairobi embassy states that a certificate is required even if English is your native or study language.
Where can I take the German A1 exam in Ghana?
Goethe-Institut Ghana runs exams in Accra and, with the Ghana Institute of Languages, in Kumasi. Register within the published window, because registration closes when places are full and bookings cannot be changed. Bring your passport or another accepted ID, such as a Ghana Card, with the same name and date of birth.
How do I pay the visa fee in Ghana?
The fee is €75. You pay it at your appointment in Accra, in cash in Ghana cedis at the embassy’s current exchange rate, or by credit card. Check the rate shortly before your appointment. A new application after a refusal usually costs the fee again.
Which school certificates does the Accra embassy ask for?
The Opportunity Card sheet lists the WAEC BECE and WASSCE certificates, alongside your birth certificate based on first registration, transcripts, degrees, employer statements, salary slips and a CV where they apply. Upload clear scans and bring the originals to your appointment. Make sure names and dates match across every document.
Can a sponsor in Germany replace the blocked account?
Yes, that is one accepted option. Accra accepts a formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a person in Germany. It must be under 6 months old on your planned entry date, and you need a new one for each application. A part-time job contract of up to 20 hours a week is another option.
What happens if my application is refused?
Since 1 July 2025, the free appeal (remonstration) no longer exists. You can apply again with a stronger file, usually paying the fee again, or appeal to the Administrative Court in Berlin within one month. The Accra embassy estimates court fees of about €480, paid in advance.
